Research Paper: Native American Cultural Philosophy

Sample Research Paper

In Native American cultural philosophy, oneness with the mother earth, likeness with the earth’s creations and the animals in it are given the utmost respect. Their belief structure revolves around harmony with the mother earth and association with the animal kingdom amongst other kingdoms.

Native Americans believe that they can compare themselves with spirits of animals they call ‘Totems’. Although it is their belief that various animals are associated with a person through their various aspects of life, they believe that one Totem animal remains with an individual for life and defines who the person is, what kind of spirit he possess. It is believed that after one figures out what his totem animal or Life totem is, he can communicate with this totem in times of need and it will provide them with guidance and wisdom.

To find one’s life totem one must look at his life with introspect and see what animal or bird he finds the most liking to, finds himself curious about or drawn to. As for me, I very much feel that my life totem is the Deer.

In the Native American philosophy deer as an animal spirit represents the spirit of

“Gentleness, compassion, perception, gentleness in word, thought and touch, ability to listen, grace and appreciation for the beauty of balance, power of gratitude and giving, ability to sacrifice for the higher good, alternative paths to a goal, sensitivity, peace, physical pacing, body awareness”(Victoria’s wisdom,2007)

Keeping my nature and the nature of the deer in the wilderness in mind, I have come to the conclusion that it is the deer that best describes my nature and, therefore, must be my life Totem.
