American people spend 33 billion dollars per annum on weight loss remedies (Cekola P., 2005). Even though a lot of proper and well-planned diets are available, some bad ones also exist. It has been only in the last few decades that proper studies looking into the effectiveness of these diet plans have come into light. We focus on a few of these plans.

The Atkins diet is a high protein, low carbohydrate, high-fat diet. It requires that the person can consume any amounts of meat, eggs or cheese but the carbohydrate sources like milk, pasta vegetables etc have to be restricted. It allows a high amount of proteins usually restricted in other programs. It is a simple plan to follow with no complicated meal structures. High fat intake provides with calories and protein provides with amino acids needed for exercise and muscle development and repair. No conclusive results have come from studies about the benefits or disadvantages of this diet. High protein intake involves the risk of kidney function, osteoporosis etc (Cekola P., 2005). Regular vitamin and mineral supplements are needed for meeting the daily nutritional requirements. Reduction in vegetable fiber intake can lead to long-term gastrointestinal problems. People also find it hard to maintain the program for a long time.
